Latitudinal Dependence of the Ionospheric Slab Thickness for Estimation of Ionospheric Response to Geomagnetic Storms

چکیده

The changes in the ionosphere during geomagnetic disturbances is one of prominent Space Weather effects on near-Earth environment. character these can differ significantly at different regions Earth. We studied ionospheric response to five storms March 2012, using data Total Electron Content (TEC) and F2-layer critical frequency (foF2) along meridian 70° W Northern Hemisphere. There are few ionosondes this longitudinal sector: Thule, Sondrestrom, Millstone Hill Puerto Rico. lacking foF2 values between were determined by experimental latitudinal dependences equivalent slab thickness TEC values. During storms, following features characteristic: (a) two-hours (or longer case) delay disturbances, (b) more mid-latitude trough (c) sharper border EIA northern crest. four 7–17 March, general tendency was transition from negative high latitudes intense positive low latitudes. fifth storm, disturbance controlled O/N2 change masked overall prolonged electron density increase 21–31 March. multiple correlation analysis revealed dependence dominant parameters’ impacts foF2.

Ionospheric redistribution during geomagnetic storms

[1]The abundance of plasma in the daytime ionosphere is often seen to grow greatly during geomagnetic storms. Recent reports suggest that the magnitude of the plasma density enhancement depends on the UT of storm onset. This possibility is investigated over a 7year period using global maps of ionospheric total electron content (TEC) produced at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The analysis confir...

Variation of ionospheric slab thickness over South Africa

Ionospheric slab thickness is defined as the ratio of TEC to maximum electron density of the F-region (NmF2), proportional to the square of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2). It is an important parameter in that it is linearly correlated with scale height of the ionosphere, which is related to electron density profile. It also reflects variation of the neutral temperature. Therefore, ionos...

Ionospheric slab thickness – analysis, modelling and monitoring

A review of the climatological and storm-time behaviour of the ionospheric slab thickness is presented based on long-time observations at a European mid-latitude site, Dourbes (50.1°N, 04.6°E), and on published results from other studies. An operational electron density and slab thickness monitoring system, established to provide real-time characterisation of the local ionospheric dynamics, is ...

Ionospheric f oF2 anomalies during some intense geomagnetic storms

The global evolutions of f oF2 anomalies were examined for three very intense geomagnetic storms, namely the Halloween events of October–November 2003 (Event X, 29–30 October 2003, Dst −401 nT; Event Y, 20–21 November 2003, Dst −472 nT), and the largest Dst storm (Event Z, 13–14 March 1989, Dst −589 nT). For Event X, troughs (negative storms) were clearly seen for high northern and southern lat...

Investigation of the effects of geomagnetic storms on ionospheric irregularities using the combination of ground-based GNSS and SWARM satellites

Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...
